Thank you very much for your participation in the Asia Pacific Hand Hygiene Excellence Award. The award has been very well received, and as we continue to receive requests for participation, to date we have over 90 applications representing 7 countries and with more entries expected to participate in the Award 2011 round.
On behalf of the panel of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) of the award, we are happy announce the finalists for the 2010 Award of the Asia Pacific Hand Hygiene Excellence Award. The finalists are:
Southern Health, Melbourne, Australia- Southern Health has utilized a top-down and bottoms-up approach to create awareness on the importance of hand hygiene among its staff. Through these efforts, today 90% of the beds have alcohol hand rub dispensers attached and the hand hygiene compliance per the 5 Moments of Hand Hygiene is currently estimated at over 70%. To ensure continuity and sustainability of the program, annual certification is required by all healthcare workers via intranet course (with certification credential) and observation audits to all wards are conducted annually.
Artemis Hospital, New Delhi, India - The Artemis Hospital is an exemplary model of a hospital with dedication and commitment to proper hand hygiene practices. Since the design of the hospital layout, areas designated for sinks were planned with a 10:1 patient bed to sink ratio, 100% of trolleys are equipped with an alcohol hand-rub dispenser, and recently pocket-sized hand rubs are being distributed amongst the staff. The hand hygiene compliance rate per the 5 Moments of Hand Hygiene is estimated at 80% and random knowledge checks amongst staff show 80-90% correct in hand hygiene knowledge and techniques. Since the beginning of the hand hygiene campaigns, their rates of HAI have dropped from 1.15 to 0.44.
Hue Central Hospital, Hue, Vietnam – The last finalist, Hue Central Hospital, is a public hospital with over 2,100 hospital beds. Activities started in 2006 by establishing baseline measurements of nosocomial infection rates in the hospital and the hand hygiene campaign programs were initiated in 2007 with support of the hospital leadership to upgrade and improve its hand hygiene facilities. Continuous monitoring of infection rates are reported regularly to management and the hospital has set institutional goals in regards to hand hygiene:
- Safety of Patients is the hospital’s reputation and ethics of the medical staff
- Safety for patient is in your hands
- Clean your hands, it is your life and your patients
- Clean you hands as you are doing it to improve the quality of the hospital
These three facilities will be visited by the KOLs to review their implementation of the hand hygiene campaigns and will utilize the new WHO Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment Framework as basis for selection of the two winners of the award. The winners will be recognized for their efforts in improving patient safety through hand hygiene at the Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control Congress 2011 in Melbourne, Australia.
Your dedication and commitment to improving hand hygiene compliance in your institutions is essential to better patient safety and quality of healthcare and a lot of progress has been achieved already. However, there is still a long way to go, but with our joint efforts and belief we will continuously improve day after day.
Thank you for your interest in the Asia Pacific Hand Hygiene Excellence Award and we look forward to receiving your application forms for the 2011 Award. The deadline for submission is May 5, 2011.
